Mindset is your attitude towards anything or to be specific towards your work and life.
The type of the mindset you adopt for doing the task determines your rate of success.
People with a positive growth mindset tend to perform better and explore more opportunities than the people with fixed mindset.
"The electric bulb inventor Thomas Edison and the world's fastest sprinter Michael Jordan represent people with positive growth mindset"
Growth Mindset vs Fixed Mindset
How to promote growth mindset?
(1) Don’t praise ability or the intelligence rather praise efforts:
It has been found that people who are praised on the basis of their traits like talent and the intelligence resulting in the squeezing performance in the future and they start taking less task in hand or stop exploring new opportunities because of the fear of failure affecting their intelligence and the talent.
They feel that if they fail then people will doubt their talent and the intelligence. In order to save their trait they contract themselves and start taking those task in hand which they feel can accomplish which can keep their intelligence intact or stop exploring new opportunities because of the fear of failure or losing their intelligence in front of the others.
They become more performance oriented and their learning starts decreasing.
Their growth stagnates and they become fixed mindset people. Whereas on the other hand, when we praise people on the basis of their efforts like you achieved your goal because of the constant efforts you made towards reaching it, are more likely to perform.
They start believing that anything can be achieved with efforts. They do not fear failure and explore new opportunities and their learning curve expands and they become growth mindset people.
(2) Your efforts should correlate the results:
It is important to correlate your efforts with the outcome. I am not contradicting the famous work psychology or the philosophy that one should only concentrate on the efforts but making it more effective through effort-result correlation so that you come to know the direction of your efforts and re-direct them for the better results.
Let us understand it with the help of an example: Mr. A and Mr. B both maintain their science blog but Mr. B is able to gain more readership than Mr. B. Let us look at their efforts:
Let us look their effort-result correlation charts:
You can see that the efforts of Mr. B are more correlated (0.84, for every unit of the effort 0.84 is converted into the desired result) with the results than that of Mr. A (0.43).
(No one will read your articles unless you share them on the daily basis where Mr B shared all his articles on the daily basis and raised the viewership to 400, 2 times than that of Mr A.)
He needs to change his efforts plan or implement the right strategy like devoting more proportion of time in sharing his post on the social media so that he can increase his readership.
Making efforts without correlating with the results is like hitting at the right point otherwise, it can kill the growth mindset.
(3) Do not hide your failures:
It is again found that people who tend to hide their failures, keep it in the box and do not share with anybody promote fixed mindset and are likely to under perform in the future.
And after some time, they start making efforts in the negative direction that is they make efforts in hiding their failures from others, living with it making it something which makes them feel uncomfortable and anxious.
The growth mindset people evaluate & analyze their failures with friends and colleagues and try not to repeat them in the future. They take failures as a stepping stones and shift & expand their learning curve in the positive direction.
(4) Don’t say but involve yourself in learning, making strategy and setting goals with others:
When you want other to develop the growth mindset, you need to participate in their activities like learning with them, making strategy and goal setting.
Mere saying “develop growth mindset” and “try hard” will not serve the purpose. These words only provide the open space of what to do? But do not tell or give the direction about how to do it?
For example: "Exercise hard you will lose your weight" tells me what is to be done but didn’t inform me that how to be done?
“You need to lose weight by restricting your calorie intake, burning accumulated fat and avoiding bad eating habits” tells both “what is to be done?" and “how to be done?”
This statement gives the direction on losing the weight which can be accomplished through the following 3 steps strategy:
Step 1: Restricting your intake of energy to 1800 calories/day
Step 2: Burn accumulated fat
Step 3: Kill bad eating
It is true that talent & brains do not bring success but your constant efforts and the practice leads to your goal develop a growth mindset.
Education plays a very important role in creating & developing a growth mindset.
But somehow we misinterpreted the meaning of the education and made our mindset fixed.
We become possessive towards our titles which we get through education like:
We have forgotten that we have attained these titles or the adjective because of the effort we made towards acquiring them.
We need to shift from adjective based (talent, Intelligence, Titles) thinking to verb based (efforts) thinking in order to develop a positive growth mindset by using the above-mentioned methods and the strategies.
